Sarah Stanley’s “Tuesday Girl”

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

A new cd artwork package for Americana heartbreaker Sarah Stanley.  She has become a local favorite in LA’s live music venues, including The Cinema Bar, Taix, El Cid, Room 5 and the Echo. Her songs have recently been heard on Indie 103.1, ABC’s “Men in Trees,” the Lifetime movie, “More of Me,” starring Molly Shannon, and she was recently chosen to write a song for and sing at the Getty.  She also has created the soundtrack for a new bordello-oriented TV series with my co-writer/producer Rich McCulley.

The theme was drawn from the title song “Tuesday Girl,” which is about a girl who realizes that she is just one of several that her boyfriend sees throughout the week.  The tune has a Tarantino sort of vibe, so we went for a moody look.  We used Sarah as this character putting on her makeup in the mirror, and we used Sarah’s actually battleworn old calendar book for the cover and rear title listing on the record.  We shot the art and photos here at the studio, utilizing the studio dressing room mirror and the worn green stool people sit on when they are doing their makeup.

Cosmic Campfire

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

Singer songwriter Ric Taylor wanted an eco-wallet design that captured his vision of sitting around a dying star campfire on the moon, playing along with an extraterrestrial guitar god made from another nebula photo.  Nearby, an astronaut looks over the record he just bought from the merch table while toasting a marshmallow over that same fire.

All About The Money

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

A cover for Sarah Stanley’s upcoming electronic release “All About The Money” — a special honky-tonky single written with Rich McCulley that will be used as the title song for a new tv show about a legal brothel.  The tune called for some blingy imagery, so we created a sapphire belt buckle look with a diamond inlay of a dollar sign. The font is a classic country font that has been squeezed vertically for a slightly different look.

Since this is an iTunes-only release, timed to be introduced with the debut of the show, the cover needed to look good small.

Todd Herfindal — Collective

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

As one half of the Meadows, Todd Herfindal’s new solo record has been eagerly anticipated by pop-loving people everywhere.  We created this six panel digipak design to accompany it.

Overall, we wanted to create a feeling of spaciousness and beauty and fun, while not taking ourselves too seriously.  To mirror the expansiveness of the music, the cover shows his face silkscreened as if it were floating blissfully in the clouds, with a toy dirigible aloft nearby.  Inside, you find a detailed underwater world with a whirlpool, beautiful fish, plants, bubbles, and a sunken ship.  Todd is seen peering from a fanciful submarine we created.

The CD face echoes the sky theme with a blazing sun and clouds over the silver face of the CD.

To keep the entire look consistent for the media rollout of the record on September 29, we also created a new onesheet, a website, and customized MySpace page.  Todd’s publisher PEERMusic will be supporting the record with an extensive music supervisor marketing campaign.

Honkytonk & Vine

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

A short-run, advance release for David Serby’s upcoming third country record “Honky Tonk & Vine.”  We took the portrait earlier this summer in Philippinotown in front of a cool worn rock verge.  He will be distributing these to industry folks at the Americana Music Festival & Conference next week.

Broadsheet

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

This is a credit sheet to accompany a digital only release of a special two-song single by Bradley Keys. The message of the music is political, so we went for a silkscreen handbill with rough typography approach.

Flip flop hip hop

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

This sticker will be the cover art of an industry-only disc to be distributed by Bradley Keys’ management to potential licensing partners. The low cost, short run process uses recycled cardboard sleeves for a rough look, onto which these stickers are placed. On-cd printing is simple grayscale on the silver disc.  Photos on this release are by the fabulous surf shooter Peter Dive.

Dream Drivin’

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

A beautiful record from a beautiful person, Lorie Doswell, recorded out of Ed Tree’s famous Treehouse Studio in the valley. The sound, which is rootsy Americana and folk, suggested imagery of nature and old things, and we were fortunate to find an old 60s Chevrolet truck to shoot with out east of Los Angeles in the Lancaster area. The dream-oriented theme led to a ghostly transparent background on the cover, and we shot her pictures to evoke the casual charm and confidence that is heard throughout Lorie’s music. The cd design is borrowed from the truck’s weathered speedometer, with the shiny disc surface showing through the numbers and rough edges. The design is 6 panel digipak with clear tray, matte finish.

Spencer Davis record reissued

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Spencer Davis’s most recent record “So Far”, for which we did the art and packaging design, is being re-released by Fuel 2000 Records this summer in a new special edition. All the original packaging will be included in this release.

The cover shows his face (from a Henry Diltz photo) watermarked over an old map of the British Isles, plus a compass marking I made from his old 60s logo:
